IPACA Weekly - Episode 5 - Needed?

This week I came across the 'invisible bike helmet' which has been created by Swedish design students Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin. The invention has been in the works since 2005, at which point it was just a concept for a master’s thesis. Rather than sitting on top of the head, the Hövding is worn around the neck, much like a scarf. Inside, it contains sensors that detect the movement of the collar. If it senses an accident has happened, the bag inside is filled with helium gas in 0.1 seconds and immediately wraps around the cyclist’s head to protect them from the impact.

The Hövding actually protects more of the head than a typical helmet and is more convenient to wear. It also contains a black box that saves ten seconds’ worth of data recorded before the incident. The video below shows the Hövding in action:

Paralyzed by a stroke, Henry Evans uses a telepresence robot to take the stage -- and show how new robotics, tweaked and personalized by a group called Robots for Humanity, help him live his life. He shows off a nimble little quadrotor drone, created by a team led by Chad Jenkins, that gives him the ability to navigate space -- to once again look around a garden, stroll a campus ... IPACA Weekly - Episode 2 - Proxy Servers

If you use third party proxy sites to bypass filtering whether at home or at school, then you are putting your identity on the line.

Third Party Proxy Servers - The Facts -

For a proxy server to provide safe or unblocked traffic, it must have a connection to a large Internet backbone. It needs bandwidth in order to send your information back and forth to you. This wouldn’t be a big problem if there was only one user. The problem with bandwidth is that it costs money. Therefore large quantities of bandwidth cost much money. Add the costs of maintenance, operation and security and you get the picture; more money. So ask yourself, why would anyone spend so much money on creating a FREE proxy server service? The only logical answer is that it's not free. They have a plan to pull a profit from their investment.

Third party proxy servers are often operated by hackers, Internet "con-artists", and people with similar intentions. All they really want to do is collect personal information from you, which they will easily accomplish if you use their proxy server. Hackers commit many illegal acts, including credit card fraud. They simply wait for you to use your personal information (including Facebook login details, passwords, etc.) while you are connected to their proxy server, and that's that. Make no mistake, the server operators/admins can, and very likely will, read all your traffic and use it in any way they want to.

The bottom line is: If you use a third party proxy server, you are running the risk of being an identity theft victim, and your computer could even be used to commit crimes without your knowledge. For this reason alone we would encourage our entire Academy community to avoid there use. We already have safe and robust systems in place that we pay for. There is no need to use third party proxy servers.
